1981 BMW R65 changes and improvements -

• Smaller, ight frame compared to other boxers (quick handling, ess prone to boxer wobble)
• Lighter than any early 80's 650 (406 lbs dry)
• Thick upper triple clamp (more front-end stability)
• Beefy swingarm (less flex in the rear end)
• Shorter wheelbase than other boxers (quick handling)
• Decent range (hits reserve at ~220 miles).
• Dual front disk brakes with ATE calipers.
• Hundreds of small improvements to all BMW boxers, rom which the R65 benefitted as well. Major improvements:
• Electronic ignition
• 40% lighter flywheel (revs & shifts easier)
• Nikasil lining in cylinders
• Plastic airbox & "pure air" system (allows richening of carburetion while still meeting emissions regulations)
• Larger valves (by 2mm each)
• Additional crossover pipe in exhaust
• Larger oil pan (increases oil capacity by .2 quart)
• More cushioning in driveshaft Y throttle cable with splitter instead of two cables.
• Lighter clutch assembly, on-asbestos clutch plate
