Velocettewas oneof severalmotorcyclemanufacturersinEngland, hich company started in 1904 at Hall Green,Birmingham..Velocettewas a small, amily-owned firm, elling far fewer hand-built motorcycles than the mass-produced machinesof the giantBSA, ortonor Triumphconcerns.Renowned for the quality of its products, he company was "always in the picture" in international motorcycle racing, from themid-1920's through the 1950s, ulminatingin two World Championshiptitles (1949–1950 350cc) and itslegendary and still-unbeaten(for single-cylinder, 00 cc machines) 24hours at 100mph (161km/h) record.
Velocette, hile small, as a great technical innovator and many of its patented designs are commonplace onmotorcyclestoday, ncluding the positive-stop foot shift andswinging arm rear suspension with hydraulic dampers.
The Velocette LE (which stands for “Little Engine”) was the result of 20 years of development with the focusbeing on ease of use, uietness, eather protection, simple controls, conomy and reliability. From these design constraints emerged the most radical machine of the day. It is powered by a 192cc, ater-cooled,four-stroke, ide-valve, lat-twin engine with three speed gearbox and shaft drive.
The LE model was produced in relative small numbers (as the main customer for thismodelwas only the police) from1948 until this company was voluntarily liquidatedin February 1971
This unconventional 1970 Velocette LE200 model looks like it must have done when it was in its juvenile days, where also today it still starts instantly, s running as sweet (and silent!) as can be, andles really well, here also the gearbox is shifting fine and everything works like should.
The paint and chrome are in a decent condition for the year, hough absolutely not perfect and both leg-shields are showing a number of small dings.
This is one of the very last LE's produced, s the last one produced in early 1971 has a framenumber that is only 72 digits higher.
Today there are not many of the Velocette LE models available on the market, s most of them have been scrapped soon after they retired from police-service, s because of their very outdated looks there was no interest for them on the second-hand motorcycle-market of those days.
This particular machine has a code inside the tool-lid on top of the gas-tank with the code LM (=London Metropolitan) 110 (=vehicle number) and has, fter it was bought by a Dutch person in 2010, een road-registered in the Netherlands from then on.
The odometer reads 22714 mile, hich is most probably the correct recording, nly have no history to confirm this.
Both the rims are still the original 'Dunlop' ones and all gauges, witches, lectrical components etc. are all 'made in Great Britain'. Something else interesting is that the original tire-pump is still in place.
